This volume contains more than 1,300 names gleaned from cemetery records, war memorials, the York County minutes of 1923, (where the Regimental Archives Committee of the day had listed names of men lost in the recent war, submitted from towns, municipalities, school sections and churches in the county), and newspapers of the war years that provided dates, next of kin, ages and birthplaces. The alphabetical arrangement of names simplifies searching, and the short biographies are of great interest to family historians. All sources of information are clearly identified.

This volume contains the names of almost 10,000 persons from the City of Toronto, along with biographical information, taken from the casualty lists of the Toronto Daily Star, and supplemented by additional information from plaques and memorials, cemeteries and armouries.
Anyone with a Toronto connection is included: those born in the city, but moved elsewhere; recent immigrants who died after returning overseas; those who had attended school, enlisted or trained in the city; and those that died in a city hospital, or were buried in a Toronto cemetery. All are included to provide another source for family members looking for someone believed to have lived, even for the shortest time, in Toronto. By far most of the lives lost were of the Army and on the western front, but there were also the women who died on torpedoed ships, in bombed hospitals, or from sickness and exhaustion. A few merchant sailors are included.
The alphabetical arrangement of names simplifies searching, and the short biographies are of great interest to family historians. Data can include: surname, rank, given names; awards received; date and place of death, or date when death reported; age and place of birth; cause of death; place of burial; units to which the person belonged; length of time at the front; name of wife and children and their street; other next of kin with relevant information; number of years living in Toronto; place where educated; type or place of employment before enlisting; membership in church or other organizations; time and place of enlistment or joining; training and military experience; messages from Chaplain, military superiors, or good friends; location of memorial or marker; and memorial service held. All sources of information are clearly identified.
